Description:
This session will include physical therapy goals and objectives for individuals with a lower extremity amputation. A review of the systemic changes that occur in the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, strength, postural stability, and balance with this growing population will be included. Current literature will be analyzed and discussed. The importance of balance and core strengthening will be emphasized with a focus on use of a pool. Adaptations to the technique Ai Chi will be included.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the systemic effects of a lower extremity amputation.

2. Prescribe an appropriate aquatic exercise program for a patient/client with a lower extremity amputation.

3. Evaluate progress of prescribed program.
