Many women have access to fitness and wellness services that specialize in prenatal and postpartum exercise, low back, hip, and other joint pain, as well as general health services. Clients often entrust medical information to their personal trainers, massage therapists, and yoga and Pilates instructors, yet may not seek out physical therapy care due to lack of information or education about PT services. Fitness and wellness professionals can be a valuable referral source for women who could benefit from physical therapy. Physical therapists can provide better continuity of care by referring patients to qualified fitness and wellness professionals to begin or continue appropriate exercise or muscle training once physical therapy is no longer medically necessary. Strong relationships with fitness and wellness providers help to drive referrals, ensure continuity of care, and provide opportunity for education in addition to maximizing benefit for an efficient cost to the patient.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the benefits of referring to health and wellness providers in the women's health physical therapy environment.
2. Describe the skills and services provided by women's health physical therapists to the target audience of health and wellness professionals.
3. Apply principles from case studies to develop working relationships with fitness and wellness professionals who may share interest in patients with similar goals.
