Technological advances, learner proficiency with technology, and administrative budgets have made online learning an attractive instructional strategy in continuing education (CE). The face-to-face lecture approach is believed to be a less effective way to facilitate learner knowledge and one that does not as readily foster higher-level critical thinking skills. Contemporary instructional models that include blended and online instruction allow for a more adaptive and collaborative educational experience. In physical therapy education, studies have found that compared with traditional instruction, blended learning models resulted in comparable to better performance on practical exams, learning in cognitive and psychomotor domains, and knowledge confidence. Online and blended education formats allow therapists the flexibility to complete educational courses in a time and cost-efficient manner, and technological advances enable the development of unique courses to meet learners' needs.

This 2-day course will provide attendees with foundational information on online education, exposure to various commercially available platforms and resources, and hands-on practical skills that will enable them to develop online courses. Attendees will receive individualized mentoring on an online education proposal in a content area of their choosing. Following the workshop, there will be an opportunity to further develop proposals into online courses hosted by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Synapse Education Center.

1. Discuss the evidence supporting online and blended education in health care.

2. Describe the key principles of successful online and blended education.

3. Compare and contrast different platforms and formats for online education.

4. Create an action plan to implement an evidence-based online education module.
