Roll With It! Wheelchair Skills Training From Basics to Extremes
Section: Federal PT Section
Session Code: FD-2B-5638
Date: Friday, February 23, 2018
Time: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Location: New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center
Session Type: Educational Sessions
Session Level: Intermediate
Manual wheelchair users require comprehensive training to support mastery of mobility skills for life participation. Acquisition of wheelchair skills can maximize independence, safety, and quality of life while also decreasing injury risk. Together, this supports the wheeler to be healthy, active, and productive. When appropriate wheelchairs and proper skills training are not delivered, the positive impact on community access and participation is compromised. This session will empower PTs to understand, perform, and teach wheelchair skills. The speakers will share guidance for optimal wheelchair selection and configuration, efficient education methods, and practical training techniques ranging from basic propulsion to advanced skills for extreme mobility and sports participation. An evidence-based approach for teaching wheeled mobility, the Wheelchairs Skills Program (WSP), and a validated outcome measure for evaluating skill capacity will be highlighted with an emphasis on motor learning theories to maximize mobility skill progression in a clinical setting. Attendees will learn about the effectiveness of 3 methods of WSP interventions as demonstrated through randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, and relevant outcome measures. Case examples with photos and video will highlight key points. Pertinent research findings, clinical and "real-world"쳌 wheeler experience will be incorporated to facilitate an evidence-based and practical approach to providing essential wheeled mobility training.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Describe manual wheelchair optimal rear-wheel position in 2 planes.
2. Review wheelchair skills progression from basic propulsion to community mobility and advanced wheelies.
3. Describe 5 motor-skills learning principles related to wheelchair skills performance.
4. Describe how to access free, open source wheelchair skills assessment and training resources.
