The more idiopathic toe walking is studied, the less it can be called "idiopathic." There is a growing connection between toe walking and sensory processing disorder (SPD). Treatments supporting direct intervention for SPD do not seem to demonstrate long-term gait changes. Changing a habitual gait pattern is challenging, especially in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who can also have significant sensory processing differences and may not respond to traditional physical therapy approaches. However, untreated toe walking can have biopsychosocial impacts over time, and children with ASD already exhibit gross motor delays compared to their typical peers. The speakers will review video cases and gait analyses of children with ASD exhibiting equinus contractures and persistent toe walking in a pilot study using serial casting and ankle foot Orthopaedics Sectionses intervention.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Summarize current research available connecting idiopathic toe walking to sensory processing disorders and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
2. Discuss an evidence-based rationale for treating toe walking in children with these disorders.
3. Review evidence regarding interventions for children with sensory processing concerns and/or ASD who toe walk.
4. Analyze current cases of children with ASD pre and post interventions of serial casting and ankle foot Orthopaedics Sectionses.
