In September 2017, the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs published the newly revised Clinical Practice Guideline for Rehabilitation of Individuals With Lower Limb Amputation. The revision method was shaped by the agencies' decision to follow GRADE criteria set by the National Academies of Science as the standard for inclusion of scientific literature in clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). Based on this new approach, the 2017 CPG has 18 recommendations versus over 200 in the 2007 CPG, with 4 strong for쳌 recommendations, 13 weak for쳌 suggestions, and 1 that could not be completed. The 4 strong for쳌 recommendations are for recognizing gender identity, use of a rehabilitation strategy, use of valid and reliable outcomes metrics, and monitoring conditions related to poorer outcomes. Notable content includes suggestions for the use of semi-rigid or rigid dressings, microprocessor knees, acute rehabilitation centers, and annual reevaluations by a transdisciplinary amputation care team over the lifetime of care. The significant changes in the CPG, the only CPG related to lower limb amputation rehabilitation in the United States, are essential for physical therapists to understand and know. This block of instruction will familiarize attendees to the methodology of the review, the current content, implications for current practice, and additional resources.
