This session will use multiple video demonstrations of manual therapy techniques to address soft tissue and joint dysfunctions in equine and canine mammals. A specific focus on joint biomechanics in relation to restoring functional movement will be addressed. A variety of manual therapy techniques have been used in human physical therapist practice for years to reduce pain and inflammation, increase joint range of motion, and restore normal movement patterns to successfully return individuals to daily activities, work, and sport. With advanced education in cross-species anatomy, biomechanics, and animal behavior, physical therapists possess the necessary clinical reasoning skills to successfully apply a variety of manual therapy techniques learned from human study to 4-legged mammals. To highlight the use of specific manual therapy interventions on both equine and canine animals, the speakers will incorporate case scenario methodology based on commonly treated musculoskeletal conditions.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast biomechanical joint movement in human, equine, and canine skeletal systems.
2. Adapt physical therapist clinical reasoning processes to address specific soft tissue and joint dysfunctions impeding normal movement in equine and canine mammals.
3. Demonstrate various manual therapy techniques using video technology to treat common joint dysfunctions in equine and canine mammals to restore functional movement.
4. Use case study methodology to demonstrate the effectiveness of manual therapy in restoring functional movement in equine and canine mammals.
